February is the month of love. And this month I plan on making sure my husband knows exactly how much I appreciate him. While we don’t have a lot of time to go out together one-on-one anymore, I can create a great evening just for the two of us with a special recipe inspired by our favorite places to travel: Hawaii and Italy.

We’ve both loved Hawaii since we were dating and took a trip there with my family. Then we went again for our Honeymoon. And again with our two kids two years ago. The culture, the ambiance, the relaxation. It all screams the perfect vacation to us.

We’re also very interested in exploring and going on adventures and Hawaii is a great place for just that. But so is another country I’ve come to love after traveling there together when I was pregnant with our son. That special place is Italy. So in the spirit of the month of love I’ve combined our two favorite places to travel into this one dish.

This pasta puttanesca recipe starts with two key ingredients: delicious La Romanella farfalle pasta and tomatoes. So when I was getting everything I needed for the big game at Smart & Final I decided to grab the ingredients for this dish as well.

I love that Smart & Final is a one stop shop of everything from produce to meats. Smart & Final carries warehouse size items without a club fee, making shopping easy, less expensive and less daunting to shop in than a big warehouse store.

Once I got home I grabbed the ingredients I’d need for the dish and got started. I loved how quickly this dish came together and in under 30 minutes I had a delicious dinner for two perfect for any date night in.

On the way home from Smart & Final I picked up a movie rental so we could truly make this a date night. Pasta for two, wine in hand (for me… the husband doesn’t drink), and an action film. The perfect way to celebrate our love for one another.

Pasta Puttanesca with Seared Ahi

  • 8 ounces La Romanella Organic Farfalle
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1/3 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • 1/4 cup chopped black olives
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 1 tablespoon fresh oregano leaves or 1 teaspoon dried
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 can La Romanella Tomato Strips with Basil (28-ounce)
  • 3/4 cup chopped fresh arugula
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan
  • 1 ahi fillet
  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Once boiling, add farfalle pasta to the pot and cook according to the directions on the package (12-15 minutes).
  2. While the pasta is cooking, heat oil in a large skillet over medium. Add the garlic and saute about 1 minute. Add the parsley, olives, capers, oregano and crushed red pepper to the skillet, and saute for 2 minutes more. Add the tomatoes and simmer for about 5 minutes. Stir in the arugula and simmer for 1 minute more, until the greens wilt slightly.
  3. While allowing the sauce to simmer and the pasta to finish cooking, cut the ahi into 4 strips and sear on both sides. Set aside.
  4. When the pasta is cooked, scoop it out and add it to the skillet, tossing it with the sauce to combine. Add pasta water if needed to thin out the sauce. Top with grated cheese and serve into two bowls. Top each serving of pasta with two pieces of seared ahi and enjoy!
