This past Sunday I was invited to attend a showing of In The Time of The Butterflies, the latest production to hit the stage at the San Diego REP. After reading a bit about the play I decided to ask my mother-in-law to join me as I though she’d enjoy it more than my husband.

And I was right. The show was gripping, powerful, and left us almost speechless after watching. We needed time to process the play. And I made a mental note to pick up the book to read.

The play centers around 20+ years of the lives of the Maribel sisters and their experiences under Trujillo’s rule in the Dominican Republic. From young children to adults with children of their own, we are taken into their world and their experiences.

If you’re looking for the perfect date night evening then this is the show for you! From the rich, eclectic music swaying between hip-hop, rap, jazz, pop, salsa, and meringue, and dancing that just doesn’t stop, In the Heights is a show with passion, soul, and attitude.

My husband and I were lucky enough to attend the opening night performance – and the first production of the Rep’s 38th season – as guests of the San Diego Rep this past Sunday and were tapping our toes to the beat as we watched the show. As soon as we walked into the theater we were drawn into the stage, set up like a street in Washington Heights. So many details to notice and everything played into the story that unfolded. And our eyes never left the stage until the show was over. [Read more…]

The Mountaintop at the @SanDiegoREP Lyceum Theater

The San Diego REP presents the West Coast premiere of Katori Hall’s “The Mountaintop,” directed by Obie Award-winner Roger Guenveur Smith. The winner of the 2010 Olivier Award for Best New Play, the drama dares to imagine what happened to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the final night of his life, before his assassination on April 4, 1968 while standing on the balcony of Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn.

After delivering his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, Dr. King retires to his room and orders coffee from room service. Camae, the maid who brings his coffee while revealing herself to be more than she seems as she takes King and the audience to the crux of American history.

“The legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the most important in 20th century American history,” says Sam Woodhouse, co-founder and artistic director, San Diego REP.

Clybourne Park at the @SanDiegoREP Lyceum Theater

This January, San Diego REP presents “Clybourne Park,” a comedy about race, class and real estate in America, written by Bruce Norris and directed by Sam Woodhouse. The winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, the 2011 Pulitzer Prize and the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Play “Clybourne Park” has jokes flying amidst hidden agendas.

Sam Woodhouse, artistic director, San Diego REP says: “Clybourne Park is the kind of provocative theatre that we love to do at San Diego REP audacious and a touch politically incorrect, fully engaged in the American debate about property and civil rights and very, very funny in surprising and astonishing ways.”
