In an effort to get a bit creative with our desserts we decided to try a new way of making chocolate pudding… we added avocados! Since avocados are in season right now we made this chocolate avocado pudding for dessert and couldn’t be happier.
The taste was smooth and silky and the chocolate flavor was enhanced by the avocado. Plus? It was SO easy to make. It took no time at all and it didn’t need to chill.
Now I know exactly what I’ll do with avocados when I don’t want to make guacamole or put it on my sandwich and the kids are asking for dessert… it’ll be pudding time!
Chocolate Avocado Pudding
- 1/4 cup soft margarine (I used spreadable butter w/ canola oil)
- 1 cup pureed/mashed avocado
- 1 cup confectioners sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 cup corn starch
In a medium saucepan melt margarine on low.
Add avocado, sugar, cocoa, and vanilla and stir well to incorporate.
Use a spatula to mash avocado more so that everything is smooth. Cook for 3-4 minutes until thickened.
Take pudding off the heat and add corn starch. Stir well. Serve pudding warm and enjoy!
What do you love to use avocado for?

Oh my goodness, I never would have dreamed up this recipe. This is amazing! I pinned it to one of my best recipe boards.
I think if you substituted 1 c of Coconut Palm Sugar or Maple Sugar, you could cut down on the glycemic index (with the coconut palm). I think the 1/4 c of margarine or butter is harsh, but I think maybe you could look into using Coconut oil or something to make it a bit healthier. I love the use of hte avocado, but all in all, I’d like to see this recipe a bit more healthier.
Great ideas! I have a few more avocados at home. I might try and play with the recipe a bit. And we always have coconut oil on hand so that’s an easy sub. I just wonder if it’ll change the consistency. I’ve never used Coconut palm sugar or maple sugar before. Where do you purchase it?
I love avocado — I bet it would make a great chocolate pudding!
I’m really wanting to give this a try.
Hey, I’m so glad you posted this! You had mentioned it before and I wanted the recipe. Bookmarked!
I’m sure Elodie will love it if you try it out with her 🙂 It’s a favorite in our home!
I would NEVER think to mix chocolate and avocado but if you say so, I’ll have to try this out. I love eating avocado by itself, and especially in guacamole.
I really need to try avocado (I haven’t yet!), my siblings love it and it is so good for you I need to open my mind 🙂
I would have to try that to see how those flavors worked together. Very interesting to say the least!
thanks,
Mitch
This recipe sounds very interesting! Although I like chocolate and avocadoes, I don’t know if I would like them together.
What a fun recipe…..Never thought of avocado for baking!!!! Thank you for sharing!
Wow–what a combo–who would have thought??? looks great–I have never eaten avocodo–so this would be a good way to start since I love chocolate
I use it for facials if I have an avocado that is a bit too ripe to eat. I love it on everything. It’s like butter to me!
What a great idea! I’ve always wanted to do something with chocolate and avocado. Now to hunt down one of those farm stands on the side of the road…
Well I am not a fan of the avocado, no fault of its our, I just don’t care for it. But, on the other hand my wife loves it, mainly with Mexican foods. I should give the avocado a second look, sense it is pack with nutrients.
