Netflix Families in the hotel

With summer’s arrival and the influx of family vacations it can be hard to keep the kids entertained during the lulls of the day. But with Netflix Families we can bring our families together to enjoy some friendly entertainment all at the push of a button.

We’re currently on vacation enjoying the gorgeous Black Hills of South Dakota and to get here we drove to Vegas and then flew out to Rapid City. While on the road and in the hotel there were plenty of moments we turned to Netflix Families for great suggestions on what to have the kids watch.

Netflix.com/Families features several new categories including Family Movie Night, Are We There Yet and TV for Curious Kids. This was perfect for our road trip to Vegas as we enjoyed selecting some great options from the Are We There Yet row. Our kids favorite? Curious George 2 because they go on a trip too!

Learning the Benefits of Juicing with the NutriPro Juicer

Benefits of Juicing NutriPro JuicerI’ve been considering purchasing a juicer for quite a while. After hearing wonderful things about juicing and watching Fat Sick and Nearly Dead on Netflix a few months back I decided to get serious about researching great juicers. And that’s when I found NutriPro!

I received a NutriPro juicer for review and have fallen in love with the ease in which I can make fresh, delicious juices at home whenever I’d like. Plus i have the control over what I put in my juices as I make them.

By learning the benefits of juicing as I learn the ins and outs of my NutriPro juicer I hope to continue my journey to a healthier me and increase the amount of veggies I’m getting in daily.

Ever have that moment when you wonder why in the heck you thought it was a good idea to take the kids out for dinner? Get to the point where napkins are on the floor, the salt is spilled everywhere, and sugar packets are strewn across the table? Yeah… me too.

So we started to come up with a great ways for keeping kids entertained at a restaurant. While some might sound simple enough, they truly are great at distracting our kids long enough to bridge the gap between ordering our food and being served.

Juicing Recipes: Green Monster Juice

green monster juice benefits of juicingAbout a month or two ago I received a new toy for review. The NutriPro Juicer arrived at my doorstep all shiny and new and I couldn’t wait to bust it open and start using it.

The first juice I made with my juicer was a simple carrot juice. But I found that just because there was only one ingredient didn’t mean it’d be easy to get a full glass of juice! So I branched out into more complex juice recipes to find a green juice I love.

And this green monster juice hits the spot! There’s no need for any fruit other than the lime but if you’d like you can add 1/2 an apple. I chose not to so that I don’t have to figure out the calories, etc for my Nutrisystem program.

I’m using these juices as a way to get in more servings of veggies on top of the 4 I already get. And I’m having a lot of fun figuring out different variations with the veggies we have on hand!

Creating a Summer Bucket List For Kids

This summer my kids are finally old enough to truly enjoy summer. They’ve already had quite a few fun experiences and we’re only a few days into summer. So we decided to write down all of our fun ideas and create a summer bucket list for kids to help keep track of everything we want to do.

If you have kids and want to get them involved in planning their summer fun I definitely suggest having them involved in writing them down. Whether on a huge chalkboard like we did or by creating a notebook like Stacie of SimplyStacie.net did with her daughter.

I made sure to keep the kids involved and asked them what they wanted to do. When they were vague or unclear I simply asked a few questions to determine exactly what they wanted to go do.

Here’s what we decided on:

Women and Finances: The Truth About How We Manage Money

Growing up my mother was always in charge of the money. When it came to paying bills, doling out allowances, and shopping, we always saw our mom take care of it. So when I got married I just assumed that women and finances went hand in hand.

In the beginning of our marriage my husband took care of the bills. Since he was already paying the mortgage, gas & electric, cable etc before we were married it was just easier for him to continue to handle the payments. But just because he was paying the bills doesn’t mean that I wasn’t involved in the decision making behind our finances.

After we had our second child and I started to work from home we decided to adjust how we viewed finances and paying bills.  I took over paying everything and created a financial plan for where our money was going. And after discussions together we came up with our game plan.

Chocolate Avocado Pudding Recipe

In an effort to get a bit creative with our desserts we decided to try a new way of making chocolate pudding… we added avocados! Since avocados are in season right now we made this chocolate avocado pudding for dessert and couldn’t be happier.

The taste was smooth and silky and the chocolate flavor was enhanced by the avocado. Plus? It was SO easy to make. It took no time at all and it didn’t need to chill.

Now I know exactly what I’ll do with avocados when I don’t want to make guacamole or put it on my sandwich and the kids are asking for dessert… it’ll be pudding time!

Enjoy Summer Fun With A Root Beer Float Party

Root Beer Float Party

It’s the summer. And we all know what that means – party time! If you’re looking for a great way to celebrate summer and try out all of those tasty ice cream recipes you are seeing consider hosting a root beer float party.

With warm days and cool nights the weekends of summer are perfect for enjoying the classic root beer float and the gorgeous weather summer brings. Since my mom is in town visiting we hosted a root beer float party and invited her and our other extended family members down to enjoy the fun. And I couldn’t wait to use the adorable ice cream cone cups I picked up at a local discount store.

A Healthy Take on Summer Barbecue

Most barbecues are filled with tasty goodies but these summer favorites might not always be the best choice health wise. So I changed up my menu a bit and made a few healthier dishes to sub for our party favorites.

In an effort to stick with my goal of staying healthy and losing weight I made a few minor changes to our barbecue menu.

Our lighter fare items consisted of:

  • 97% Fat Free Hot Dogs
  • Turkey Bacon Burgers with Lite Cheddar
  • Watermelon Feta Salad – recipe here
  • Mixed Greens Salad with Homemade Italian Dressing
  • Corn on the Cob

The turkey bacon burgers were simply pre-made turkey burgers from the store with turkey bacon and light cheddar cheese on top. Super simple but very tasty! And less fat than a beef patty. I’m pretty sure I turned my mom into a turkey burger convert!

With most summer barbecues we find ourselves faced with heavy, filling sides like potato salad, macaroni salad, and pasta salad so I decided to lighten things up and served this delicious watermelon feta salad instead. Not only are watermelons in season right now, they’re sooo good paired with feta and basil!

Now the mixed greens, hot dogs and corn on the cob were easy additions that rounded out the meal. We served some veggies with a yogurt ranch dip that we picked up at Walmart to munch on before our meal. No need for heavy appetizers because we were saving room for dessert!

Root Beer Float Bar

After our delicious meal it was time for dessert! And what better to serve on a hot summer day than a root beer float bar with all of the ingredients and toppings set out for the guests to serve themselves.

Our root beer float bar included:

  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Root Beer
  • Whipped Cream
  • Cherries
  • Straws/Spoons/Cups
  • Root Beer Float Cupcakes – recipe here

With the combination of vanilla ice cream and a creamy root beer we had the highest quality ingredients for the perfect root beer float. The guests loved them! And you can easily add more great ice cream toppings to your table to put your floats over the top.

Since it was a root beer float party I couldn’t resist making cute little root beer float cupcakes to go along with the root beer float bar. They just fit the theme perfectly.

Root Beer Float Party Ideas

Root beer float parties are the perfect way to celebrate many summer occasions. If you’re looking for an interesting spin on 4th of July or Labor Day or simply have a birthday to share, guests love being taken back to their childhood with this favorite.

I was able to easily put together this party with the help of the fabulous inexpensive decor found at various retailers. A checkered tablecloth, some pinwheels, and other barbecue decor helped set the stage for our party and create a gorgeous spread.

By including a mix of plastic and glass cups for our floats I was able to safely serve the kids as well as the adults without worrying about anything breaking. And I couldn’t wait to try out the ice cream cone glass cups I found a few years back! They fit the theme perfectly.

Lighter Option with Half The Fat

If you’re watching your weight or trying to cut back on your soda consumption like I am you don’t have to forego the root beer float! With reduced calorie soda and lower fat ice cream varieties you can enjoy a lower calorie and lower fat option that fits your plan.

And if you choose to serve the lighter fare menu I outlined above there’ll be no need to worry about your waistline at your next get together!

Many classic flavors of summer can easily be created in a healthier, more figure friendly way. You just have to be a bit creative and try out new recipes!

Another great flavor combo for your party would be the classic taste of a 50/50 bar in your glass. It’s super simple. Just grab some orange soda, vanilla ice cream and your favorite cup. Pour the orange soda over the ice cream and stick your straw right in. Mmmm!

Top your floats off with some tasty ice cream toppings and you’ll have one heck of a sweet treat.

Root Beer Float Cupcakes

Root Beer Float Cupcakes1

This past week I hosted a fun Root Beer Float Party with my family and in celebration I decided to bake some root beer float cupcakes to go with our floats.

These cupcakes are simple and taste great! Plus they’re half the fat than if you made them from the box. Now that’s pretty awesome.

The whipped cream topping does start to melt pretty quickly so try to hold off on topping the cupcakes until just before serving.
