DIY Infant Cupcake Costume: An Easy Way For Baby To Dress Up

Looking for a cute costume for your baby? This DIY cupcake costume is a no-sew option that is absolutely perfect for baby.

DIY Infant Cupcake Costume with a onesie
One thing I’ve never been a fan of are big, awkward costumes for babies and little kids. I like something that’s breathable, moveable, and comfortable. Because each of my little ones has been mobile around the time their first Halloween came around, I’ve chosen to either make or purchase simple costumes that feel more like clothes than costumes for the little ones. My son was Charlie Brown for his first Halloween and my oldest daughter was a sushi roll.

This year is Norah’s first Halloween and just like her older brother and sister, I want her costume to be just as comfortable to move around with. However I got a little excited last year and purchased a cupcake costume on clearance after Halloween. The cupcake costume is simple but comes with a little hat. Since I wasn’t sure if she’d care for the costume, I decided to make a onesie to match. That way if we need to take her costume off at any point during the festivities we partake in, she’ll still be in costume! And? It was SO simple to make.

DIY Infant Cupcake Costume details

After heading to the store for some diapers, I was perusing the costumes and Halloween items they had up front and found the most adorable ghost onesie that would be perfect to match the cupcake costume! It’d just take a little felt and some hot glue to turn it into a cute cupcake onesie. The other onesies they had there would also be great for alternative costumes to wear under big costumes.

I started with making a cute pom out of red yarn to attach to a headband to act as a cherry on top to complete her outfit. Since I know she’ll wear a headband as long as she forgets about it, I thought this would be perfect for her costume as well in case she doesn’t wear the hat that came with it. Making poms out of yarn is super simple! Here’s how:

Easy DIY Pom Ball

What you’ll need:

  • yarn
  • scissors
  • fingers

What you do:

1. Take 2-3 fingers (depending on the size you want the pom to be) and wrap the yarn around your fingers a few times. More if you want a thicker pom, less if you want a thinner pom. Make sure to leave a tail on either end that’s about 3 inches long.

2. Take the wrapped yarn off your fingers and wrap in the center with the end of the yarn. Tie both ends together to secure the pom with a knot or two.

3. Cut the loops in each side and fluff up. Using the scissors, even up the pom so it’s somewhat level all around. Leave the ends longer so you can tie to a headband or sew to a hat.

Now it’s time to make the onesie! And, confession, this took less than 10 minutes to make from start to finish. So it’s the perfect last minute costume

What you’ll need:

  • onesie
  • fabric marker
  • scissors
  • felt in a variety of colors (brown too if you don’t have a onesie with ruffles at the bottom)
  • hot glue gun w/ hot glue sticks

What you do:

1. Grab a piece of felt to make the outline of a cupcake top for your costume. Choose whatever color you want the outline to be.

DIY Infant Cupcake Costume - trace cupcake form

2. Once you have the outline traced, cut out the cupcake top and place on the onesie to get an idea of how thick you want the outline to be. Then cut out the outline and glue down to the onesie.

3. Take a few other felt colors and cut into small rectangles. Glue inside the cupcake top outline to look like sprinkles on the cupcake.

All done! Add a pair of black pants to the outfit to complete it on Halloween night if you need something a bit warmer.

Wear Awesome Light Up Shoes and other Halloween Safety Tips

halloween safety tips stride rite 2

Since my kids were old enough to speak I lost the power to choose what they dressed up as for Halloween. But the one thing I do have say about is the safety of the costumes they choose.

I have a few guidelines for their costumes and since they’re still fairly young I haven’t had too much of a problem getting them to go along with what I say. These Halloween safety tips have helped me with easing my mind about the fact that my kids are out after dark.

And I think that they also help the kids realize how important it is to be aware of where they are and how visible they are to others out as well.

Halloween Safety Tips

1. Wear bright clothing

When choosing a Halloween costume try and make sure that there are some bright components to the outfit. Whether you add reflective tape to the costume after it’s on or you purchase a brightly colored outfit, having something visible to others in the dark can help make sure people know that your kid is there.

2. Find some light up shoes

Halloween is always a fun night out with the kids, but it’s important to stay safe as well! Stride Rite has shoes that incorporate today’s latest light up technology so they are visible at night as your child runs from house to house. Or you can string on some glow sticks onto your kids shoes!

3.  Use a flashlight

When walking the neighborhood let your kids use flashlights to lead the way. Not only will this help their visibility and help with trips and falls but it’s also super fun!

4. Ditch the masks

A child’s visibility is greatly reduced when they are wearing a mask. So if you have a small child, consider costumes without masks to help make their evening as enjoyable as possible.

5. Have a plan

Make sure to talk to your children before you head off to trick-or-treat. Let them know the plan for the evening, where you’ll be going, and what the rules are. By making sure the kids know what’s going on everyone will have a great time!

Since my daughter chose to be a butterfly this week (and designed her own costume!) we were very excite to receive these adorable Disney Wish Lights Ariel shoes. They match her costume perfectly!

Plus I know that these shoes will last a lot longer than just a few weeks even with all of the running around and jumping she does. Stride Rite shoes are our go-to shoe brand and have been since the kids first started walking.

Along with the Wish Lights shoes my daughter will be wearing, my son will be wearing his favorite green Saucony shoes with his lizard costume. Comfortable, flexible, and durable! Everything we need in a children’s shoe brand.

Simple Ideas for a Magical Disney Princess Halloween Party

There’s something magical about Halloweentime. The change of the seasons, the feel of the air, and the decorations and dressing up.

This year my kids have caught on to the magic! They eagerly awaited the day we chose our costumes for this year (my son will be going as a duck and my daughter a ladybug, both homemade) but didn’t want to leave it at that.

So I decided to create a celebration separate from our Halloween party next week to allow the kids a chance to dress up and have some fun!

Cutest Sushi Roll Ever {The Wishing Elephant}

Some moms and dads would rather not attempt to DIY a costume for their kids. Whether it be a hectic schedule, lack of materials or they’re just plain bad at crafts, it’s ok! There is a way to have your kids look super adorable in a DIY costume with none of the super glue or felt flying around the house. A great place I like to look for DIY costumes is Etsy. Some of the Etsy stores I’ve stumbled upon have costumes that would be perfect for your little ones.

A few weeks ago a good friend, Heather, posted a link to The Wishing Elephant’s Etsy store. The link went to a sushi roll costume and I knew it was the perfect idea for a great DIY costume. Now I don’t have a lot of time on my hands but I was prepared to try and re-create this costume for a news segment we were invited to participate in for The Mama Mary Show and Fox 5 News. I was already making the dino costume for my son so what’s another costume, right? But when I showed Mary the costume she contacted The Wishing Elephant and they surprised us by offering to send over a onesie in my daughter’s size!

Photo Courtesy of The Wishing Elephant

We were able to get the costume in time for the segment and as soon as we made it to the Fox 5 green room we put it on and were in awe of the cuteness! Everyone who saw Miss M fell in love with the costume and I’m pretty sure that she stole the show. At least she caught the eye of the news anchors! The costume was simple, well made and super comfy for any infant. I added a pair of neutral cream baby legs to protect Miss M’s knees and a cute headband from Evi Luna Boutique to create the look you see above.

And not only does The Wishing Elephant have adorable costumes for Halloween, they have a whole array of cute onesies that range from adorable gnomes to the ever so popular Mario and Luigi from The Super Mario Brothers. I’m especially smitten with the bow tie onesie. If we ever had another little boy I’d have to purchase it for pictures (NO! I’m not pregnant!). If you are looking for unique onesies for your little one or the perfect baby shower gift, you’ll find it here! Their appliques are made with eco felt (100% post consumer recycled plastic bottles) so you can feel good about your purchase.

Make sure to head on over to The Wishing Elephant’s Facebook page or blog and show them some love from The Simmworks Family Blog! We truly appreciate their generosity.

Rawr Dinosaurs! {DIY Dinosaur Costume}

DIY Dinosaur costume

My son is obsessed with dinosaurs. He’s loved them ever since he was introduced to Dinosaur Train on PBS Kids shortly before his second birthday. I thought it’d be fun to try and design a simple dinosaur costume for him to wear whenever he wanted around the house. I didn’t want to spend too much money so I used simple materials I already had and some sponges I picked up on a recent shopping trip. I got the idea from Rookie Mom by doing a simple search for DIY Dino costumes and just adjusted it to fit a two year old. For his 3rd birthday I might attempt to make this Buddy the Dinosaur costume (the no-sew option)… maybe.

If you want to make your own DIY Dinosaur costume just follow these simple steps below.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Yesterday afternoon my husband and I were lucky enough to see Mary Poppins at the San Diego Civic Theater in Downtown San Diego. It was a surprise trip to the theater for both of us since we didn’t actually purchase the tickets. The tickets were gifted to us by the wonderful Barbara Feldman when she realized that she would be out of town on the date of the performance. Her generosity is much appreciated and we are very thankful that we were given the opportunity to see this amazing production.

As soon as the show started we knew we were in for a treat. Burt, played by Nicolas Dromard, did an amazing job setting the scene and preparing the crowd for what was to come. The star of the show, Mary Poppins, played by Steffanie Leigh, was quite good as well. She fit the role of Ms. Poppins perfectly and made most everyone chuckle, laugh, and fall in love with her character. I was equally impressed with the talents of Q. Smith who played a very convincing Miss Andrew, as well as Queen Victoria and Miss Smythe. Her voice was stunning and the different notes she hit were amazing. I would go back just to watch her perform.

As the play went on I became more and more excited to see what costumes would appear next and what the stage would transform into. The design and colors were just fabulous. I especially loved the glitter and sparkle on the chimney sweep costumes in the second act. In fact, the chimney sweep act (Step in Time) was my favorite scene of the whole play. It made me want to get up and tap along with them… however I have no tap skills at all and would have made a total fool of myself. I also loved the set design. The Banks home on Cherrytree Lane changed and flowed with each scene change. It was quite a perfect set for the production. Bob Crowley, the set designer, must be a genius!

If you share the excitement of seeing Miss Poppins “in person,” then please come and watch the production anytime from AUGUST 10-21, 2011 at the San Diego Civic Center and celebrate the kick off to Broadway/San Diego’s 2011-2012 35th Anniversary Season!

My friend, Angela, over at The Pinky Project is excited to extend a Mary Poppins special offer for a a family 4-pack of tickets for $99 in Section B. Click here to view a detailed seating chart of the Civic Center. The offer is good for weeknight performances – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

To purchase your tickets, visit Ticketmaster, select “find tickets” under the weeknight performance you and your family would like to attend, select your desired seats and type “4PAK” in the promotion code box to receive the special Mary Poppins family 4-pack special offer. The offer is available now through Sunday, August 21, 2011. So get your tickets NOW! You don’t want to miss out.

Here’s a Quick Way to Make a Maternity Bun In The Oven Halloween Costume

Bun in the Oven Halloween Costume

I had to share my Halloween costume with everyone. Yes, there is a bun in the oven. Yes, my hair looks really bad and I have no makeup on… hopefully, I can get a better picture to post soon!

Making this costume was super easy. I grabbed a white box I had lying around, printed off a clip art photo of a bun, grabbed some hardware from my work, and printed out the due date as the time on the oven. All in all, it took less than 30 minutes and was perfect for me to wear to work. This would also be great for parties and is super comfortable and not too intrusive.

Bun In The Oven Halloween Costume

What you’ll need:

What you do:

1. Close up one side of the box and tape shut.

2. Turn the box around and cut off the two smaller panels and one of the longer panels off leaving one long panel.

3. On the closed side, paste the bun image onto the box. Trace with a sharpie to create the oven window. Attach the cabinet door hardware.

4. On the top of the box create oven range coils by using the sharpie.

5. On the long flap add rectangle print out of due date in time form as the clock on the oven. Then add the oven knob.

6. Add the ribbon on either side of the long flap and place over your neck to wear.

Were you ever pregnant on Halloween? What did you dress up as?
