Grown Up Hot Chocolate Drink Recipe for Girls Night

Grown Up Hot Chocolate #SweetNLowStars

This weekend I’m hosting bunco and that means 3 things: laughter, big winners, and alcohol. And even if I can’t partake, I can still make it fun for the gals coming over!

Whoever hosts bunco is in charge of dinner for the girls but I always like to add a little something special as well so I’m making a big batch of hot chocolate to put in the crock pot and adding a bit of Godiva chocolate liqueur to make things a little more fun.

This is the perfect recipe to warm up on a cold winter day, or to keep the laughter going as we roll the dice and find out who will win the most buncos.  [Read more…]

Quick and Easy Egg Bake Recipe with Bacon

Over the years I’ve found myself hosting a lot of get togethers around breakfast time. And that means I’ve had time to perfect my favorite brunch dishes (like my ever so popular overnight french toast bake).

One thing I love to make for brunch are egg dishes. From quiche to egg cups to this egg bake, egg dishes are so easy to throw together and are almost always the one dish that’s completely devoured by the end of our events.

And I have a secret ingredient I add to each of these dishes – Daisy cottage cheese[Read more…]

Easy Entertaining with Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry Appetizers

I love appetizers. They’re small, bite-sized, and packed with flavor. So when appetizers become easy enough  to throw together with 2-5 ingredients you know I’m interested!

Last week I was invited to attend a delicious party featuring Pepperidge Farm puff pastry and a handful of recipes. While I mingled with social media friends I was able to try a nibble of just about everything. And this pregnant mama was very grateful for the small bites.

If you’re planning a homegating party or heading to the next game for some tailgating fun, then you’ll love these quick and easy recipes you can whip up in no time.  [Read more…]

Mocha Peanut Butter Banana Shake

Mocha Peanut Butter Banana Shake with Baby Booster

I haven’t written much about my pregnancy… I guess it’s just flying by so quickly I haven’t gotten a chance. But I do have to say that this pregnancy is, by far, harder than the others.

The first few months were filled with nausea and than once that dissipated I was left with horrible heartburn after I ate anything. No, not just acidic foods or specific things. I got heartburn after every.single.piece of food I put in my mouth.

And now that the heartburn has finally subsided I’m left with the smallest stomach ever. Like seriously… baby girl grew enough that now she’s not giving me any room for food. So that leads me to alternatives to stay full and still eat nutritious meals that are tasty.

Mocha Peanut Butter Banana Shake with Baby Booster - ingredients

That’s when this delicious shake comes into play. I headed online to find a healthy alternative to my favorite meal replacement shake used pre-pregnancy and stumbled upon Baby Booster.

After a little reading and a few clicks, I had a package of their Kona Mocha flavor ordered and sent to me to try out. When it arrived they not only included the product I ordered but a few samples of their other flavors and a cool shaker bottle to use. Talk about a quick and easy way to get a nutritious meal!

Mocha Peanut Butter Banana Shake with Baby Booster - blend in magic bullet

I’m not one for just drinking something straight from the package instructions so I decided to add a few of my favorite flavors and create a whole meal that i could easily make in the mornings as I pack my son’s lunch.

No more waiting till 9am when I head back home from morning drop off to have a proper breakfast!

By adding 1/2 of a frozen banana, 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter, and some 1% milk to the Kona Mocha Baby Booster mix I had a delicious meal filled with 20g of Protein, ONLY 2g of Sugar, and all of my daily vitamins.

Now I not only can enjoy a delicious meal as we head out for drop off in the mornings, I’m also comfortably full for the morning until lunch.

Oh, and did I mention that Baby Booster is safe for pregnant moms (obviously), and nursing mothers as well as diabetics and those who are gluten free?

I can’t wait to be able to actually eat more once baby moves but for now I’ll stick with this quick and easy meal in the mornings!

DIY Birdhouses – Turning Inspiration into Reality

Easy DIY Birdhouses for Kids

About a year ago we started our house search by heading out to a few model home tours. We were trying to gauge how much we’d be able to get with our budget but we were also looking for home decor ideas as well once we did move into another home.

While at one of the model homes we saw some adorable birdhouses on posts that I knew I wanted to replicate once we found our home. So I grabbed a photo, showed to my husband, and he got to work using our new Arrow Fastener staple gun we received for review to finish everything off.

DIY Birdhouses inspiration

While our birdhouses aren’t on posts, my husband just added some platforms on our fence for our pumpkins for Halloween. After building the birdhouses with the kids (my son loves helping out in any way he can) we perched them on top of a few of the platforms.

This was a great project that we got the kids involved with and we can’t wait to figure out what the next project will be.

Our master plan? To make various birdhouses in different designs to go on the rest of the platforms once Halloween has passed. What do you think?

DIY Birdhouses

What you’ll need:

  • 3 boards of 6′ x 8″ cedar fence board (dog eared top is ok)
  • 1 – 1/2″  wooden dowel
  • 1 roll 10″ aluminum flashing
  • Snips for cutting metal
  • wood glue
  • 1″ or bigger brad nails/or an Arrow electric brad nailer
  • table saw (makes it easier for some cuts, but only required for making shingles)
  • A couple of packages of wooden shims (for shingles if no table saw)
  • jig saw
  • 2 1/4″ hole saw and a drill
  • Arrow T50 stapler
  • T50 9/16″ Arrow staples
  • T50 3/8″ Arrow staples
  • Behr paint stain samples (in colors of your choice)
  • foam brushes
  • chip brushes

What you do:

Easy DIY Birdhouses for Kids - measuring and cutting

1. FRONT/BACK: Use the provided templates below as a guide. Take one of the fence boards and lay it down flat on a table. Start at the bottom of the board, use a ruler and pencil and sketch out the shape of the front of the bird house on the board.

At the top of the sketch, cut the board straight across so you have a piece that only needs the angles cut out to complete. Take this cut piece and lay it on top of the remaining longer piece.

Clamp or temporarily screw the pieces together so that you can cut out the front and back pieces in one shot. Use the jig saw and follow the lines. You should now have the profile of your bird house cut.

SIDES: Now cut two simple rectangles to form the sides and connect the front and back pieces. The profile of the bird house will determine the height of the side. The width should be about 4″. This width will allow your roof to overhang the sides later.

ROOF: Take a fence board and measure 8″ from the end. It generally will look better if you make this cut with an angle on it so you get a nice tight peak. It does not have to be exact. Take your jig saw and set it to about 30 degrees for template 1 and 25 degrees for template 2. Make the cut. Set aside the piece you just cut and return to the left over board. From the cut end with the angle on it, measure 9 1/4″. Return the saw back to 0 degrees and make the cut.

DETAIL: Template 2 has a simple cut out affixed to the front for some extra dimension. Just trace out the design on another piece and cut it out with the jig saw. To make the small roof detail on this piece, use the same technique for making the roof. The width on these pieces is only 1″. Adjust the length to what you feel looks best. Template 1 has some trim applied. It is approximately 1/2″ X 1/4″ wide. A table saw was used to make these, but you could use the jig saw to carefully rip a 1/4″ (x 24″) off the edge of a fence board to end up with 1/4″ x 3/4″ pieces.

SHINGLES: Optionally you can go the extra mile and cut out approximately 60 shingles.

  • Option 1- If you don’t have a table saw you might consider using a pack of wooden leveling shims and cutting them down.
  • Option 2- Using the table saw rip three pieces the full length of the board to 1 1/2″ wide. Next, take the three pieces you ripped and turn them on their side (the short edge should be down on the table). Adjust the blade so that it is about 1/4″ away from the fence. Run the pieces through so that you are splitting them in half. You then have 6 – 1/4″ x 1 1/2″ strips. Stack then together and start cutting them into 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ “tiles.” If you don’t have a table saw you might consider using a pack of wooden leveling shims and cutting them down.

Lemon Artichoke Chicken Pasta + Pantry Staples to Save Time

Artichoke Chicken Pasta + Pantry Staples to Save Time

One thing I depend on as a busy mom (and exhausted pregnant lady) are the kitchen hacks I’ve come to learn over the years. One of my favorites depends on a well stocked pantry and freezer. I’ve been saved countless nights from the dreaded “what’s for dinner” question by having go-to pantry meals to serve for dinner.

Now I’ve been buying Dorot frozen crushed garlic and chopped basil for years now but during a recent grocery trip I was surprised to find sautéed glazed onions next to my beloved garlic and basil. I may have shed a small tear of joy (because I wouldn’t have to chop onions anymore!!).

By stocking up on Dorot products I bypass the time it takes to chop up herbs, garlic, and now onions before preparing my meal. That’s like 5-10 minutes of savings!

Artichoke Chicken Pasta + Pantry Staples to Save Time like frozen herbs and onions

I also try and keep items like marinated artichoke hearts in the pantry for my favorite fresh AND easy 30 minute meals – like this lemon artichoke chicken pasta.

Being able to simply dump out a jar of artichoke hearts into the basil, garlic and onions already cooking is far easier than adding the various seasonings needed to get the delicious flavor these marinated artichoke hearts give to the dish.

Artichoke Chicken Pasta + Pantry Staples to Save Time - thin chicken saves cooking time

Bonus Tip: Another great time saving kitchen hack? Pound your chicken breasts into thin cutlets so they cook faster!

Artichoke Chicken Pasta + Pantry Staples to Save Time - dredge chicken in flour

What I love about recipes like these is that I literally have everything I need right in my pantry and freezer! The only thing I added was a fresh squeeze of lemon but if you have lemon juice in the fridge you’re good to go!

The only thing I have to remember? To take the chicken out of the freezer! You’d be surprised at how hard this step is when you’re running around all day.

Artichoke Chicken Pasta + Pantry Staples to Save Time - reduce sauce

Pasta is a great go-to on busy nights. And sauces like this don’t have to be complicated. A few simple ingredients that lend themselves to one another can create a stellar dish even picky eaters like mine will enjoy.

Or you can always reach for my other pantry staple – marinara sauce. With the holidays coming up I foresee a busy time ahead and will need all of the hacks I can use!

If you’re looking for more kitchen hacks I highly suggest checking out the Hacks of Life pinterest board. So many great ideas and a TON of genius cooking hacks.

  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • juice of 1/2 a lemon
  1. Set pot of water on the stove to boil. Sprinkle in some salt.
  2. While waiting for water to boil, place chicken breast (1 at a time) in a quart size zippered bag and pound to about 1/2 an inch thin.

  8. Once pasta is done, drain and add to the sauce pan. Sprinkle with juice of 1/2 a lemon.Toss, serve in a bowl, and top with chicken.
